Trying to Offer Flexibility, But Reality Set In
Since 1969, Genpak has been a leading manufacturer providing food packaging solutions to restaurants and businesses. As an ADP® client with multiple facilities across the United States, they face complex challenges in managing employees, payroll, and HR across different jurisdictions.
Previously, Genpak struggled with two main challenges: they couldn't accommodate employees' requests for payroll advances or loans, and their workforce experienced financial stress due to unexpected expenses.
Corporate payroll manager Jen Meacham and payroll supervisor Ann Hay-Sims recall their operations before implementing Tapcheck, an earned wage access platform. Their organization's size made it impossible to handle employee requests for payroll advances.
"We'd have employees going to their HR leaders and asking if we could advance pay to them from their next check," says Hay-Sims.
"We could never say yes [to pay advances], because once word got out that we did it for one person, we knew there'd be a flood of requests coming in, and we just didn't have the technology to track advances to make sure they were deducted from the next payroll."

Finding an Integrated, Easy Solution
After discovering Tapcheck at an ADP event through ADP Marketplace, Genpak's leadership saw an opportunity to support their employees better.
"Our leadership team really liked the possibility of what Tapcheck could do for our employees," says Hay-Sims. "They saw it as a huge benefit to the employees and a boost for our whole company."
The implementation has shown promising results in just three months. "We can tell word is getting around about how great this platform is for the employees because the number of employees enrolled goes up every single week. We have almost 10 percent of our employees enrolled in the first three months," says Hay-Sims.
Despite initial concerns about potential complications, the transition proved smooth. Meacham, who handles 13 different payrolls for various Genpak divisions, found the integration seamless.

Happier Employees, No Headaches
Once the team had worked through the dozen-plus setups, it was time to roll out the benefit to employees. Both Meacham and Hay-Sims were eager to provide their staff with something so useful as earned wage access. But best of all, EWA from Tapcheck hasn’t introduced any new problems.
"None of our employees have come to us saying there's an error with their pay using Tapcheck. And the transition after the setup was smooth when we rolled it out," she says.
"The file from Tapcheck is ready for us first thing Monday morning. We pull it over, import it and run the payroll like normal. It's a great technology and it works so well," says Meacham.
As they look ahead, Genpak remains committed to supporting their workforce through this partnership with ADP and Tapcheck.
